The red mylar couch like pieces that I attached on the index cards are the byproducts of a memory that includes a red couch. I try to visualize the memories that seem to be concrete and whole; I realize that they exist in pieces that are quite vulnerable and fickle. Thus, I am presenting the process of distortion created by that change in my work.
I collect, index, and organize pieces of mental information. Sometimes I cut out pieces or paint wood blocks, and other times I make and collect object of nostalgia, like friendship key chains, in order to reconstruct a memory or to mimic the process through which my memories are reassembled. The colors and shapes of my work come from where the memory formation took place. Or, are they?
When a visualization of a memory occurs, the exclusiveness becomes general. Memory becomes metaphor. I cue the viewers to be involved and have an experience with my memory. By doing so, I explore the bittersweet feeling of seeing something so personal becoming available to everyone as well as describing the doubtful nature of memory.
